Job purpose
The Outreach Associate/Senior Outreach Associate leads AFJ/AFJ Action Campaign initiatives, under guidance of the Deputy Director of Outreach, to deepen and expand engagement of progressive organizations, national and state advocates, and legal communities to elevate the importance of the courts with AFJ/AFJ Action’s networks and the public. Working with staff across AFJ departments, the Outreach Associate/Senior Outreach Associate works to expand AFJ’s presence in the judicial nominations and broader progressive movements, including leading substantive engagement and organizational aspects of AFJ’s member organization program.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead outreach initiatives with national and state progressive groups, grasstops and political donors, attorneys and legal elites to engage on the courts and participate in AFJ’s network, with an emphasis on AFJ’s member and partner groups;
- Build and maintain relationships with national organizations and AFJ’s core constituencies to increase awareness of the importance of the courts and mobilize against or in support of nominations and policy priorities;
- Assist with organizing outreach events nationally and in-state by building turnout, recruiting partners, and providing logistical support;
- Support programming, communications, and operational strategies to deepen relationships with AFJ member organizations, grow membership, identify opportunities for member program to further organizational priorities, and strengthen dues/renewals processes;
- Participate in work to increase AFJ’s racial equity capacity internally and as embodied in AFJ’s member organization program and partnerships;
- Develop and implement targeted partner engagement plans for AFJ priority nominations and policies in issue area such as court reform, working with Communications to create sample content for groups to disseminate via newsletters, action toolkits, sample letters to the editor, sign-on letters and press materials;
- Maintain and build contact lists, including member and supporter information in EveryAction;
- Support Development activities to publicize events, including annual reception, assist with event planning, and engaging donors in nominations and courts work;
- Work with membership staff to engage member organizations and recruit new members;
- Assist with managing and planning programs for Outreach interns;
- Work across departments to assist with outreach for additional organization priorities as necessary;
- Perform other duties and assist other departments as required.
Qualifications
- BA or BS degree or equivalent experience and 1-3+ years’ experience in campaign, community, or campus organizing/outreach; coalition-building experience preferred;
- Demonstrated experience working with variety of stakeholder organizations and individuals to engage and motivate to action, including underrepresented constituencies and organizations;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to interact online, on the phone and in-person with stakeholders, legal community, coalition members, and professional staff;
- Experience with coalition organizing and community building;
- Experience with constituent management systems such as EveryAction, Salsa, VAN, Convio;
- Demonstrated success planning events and/or program series;
- Highly organized and detail oriented with experience developing or sustaining engagement tracking systems;
- Experience working on issues related to social justice causes and constitutional protections;
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment;
- Demonstrated commitment to centering underrepresented and diverse constituencies, such as communities of color, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ communities, and more;
- Excellent interpersonal skills, “can do” attitude and a desire to work in a collegial and diverse environment.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary minimum for this position is $50,000 consistent with the salary minimums set forth in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between Alliance for Justice/Alliance for Justice Action Campaign and the Washington-Baltimore News Guild, TNG-CWA Local 32035. An exceptionally qualified candidate that has demonstrated ownership of outreach initiatives in previous roles, we’ will consider hiring at a Senior Associate level, the starting salary for which is $60,000.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer and communicate with others while doing so. On occasions, travel by train and airplane. Work Environment
This is a full-time position that is eligible for a hybrid work schedule (combination of in-person and remote work). General office working conditions, the noise level in the office is usually quiet. Some occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities. AFJ’s non-management staff members are unionized with the Washington-Baltimore News Guild, CWA Local 32035 and this position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
Direct Reports
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but will assist in management of interns.
