Job Summary
The Locksmith supports the university key control system and security of facilities. Repairs, maintains, and installs all hardware pertaining to door openings.

Job Description

Typical duties include but are not limited to:
  • Repairs and maintains locks, doors, and frames. Installs new locks and responds to emergency calls.
  • Cuts new and duplicate keys and pins cores as needed.
  • Performs new construction key/lock take-offs while reviewing and approving hardware specifications according to FGCU standards.
  • Maintains records and logs of repairs, inventory used, costs, time and other information requested.
  • Cleans and maintains all work areas, tools, and equipment. Ensures tools and equipment are in a safe operating condition.
  • Maintains tool and supply inventory. Assists with ordering supplies for the department.
  • Complies with applicable environmental, health and safety laws and regulations, university policy, and accepted safe work practices.
  • Assists with routine and preventative repairs and maintenance of exterior sliding and swing doors.
  • Serves as Essential Personnel and provides assistance in the event of an emergency on campus.


Other Duties:
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Four years of full-time work experience as a locksmith.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher and Outlook).
  • Valid driver's license required.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Best Key Locking System.
  • Experience with automatic sliding and swing entrance doors.
  • Experience with ADA specifications and electronic openers.
  • Experience with swipe and proximity readers, electrified locks, and access controls systems.
  • Experience with low voltage wiring of panels, readers, and strikes.
  • Completion of a locksmith apprenticeship program.
  • Experience working within a higher education environment.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Advanced knowledge of the locksmithing trade, tools, equipment, and best practices.
  • Knowledge of basic hand tools, power tools, materials, shop equipment, and maintenance related processes.
  • Knowledge of Best Key Locking System and products.
  • Knowledge of automatic sliding and swing entrance doors.
  • Knowledge of ADA requirements as they pertain to door openings.
  • Knowledge of NFPA requirements as they pertain to door openings.
  • Knowledge of cabinet lock and key maintenance.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with a diverse group of staff, faculty, students and the community in a service-oriented environment.
  • Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes an equitable environment.
  • Ability to set priorities and complete assignments on time.
  • Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to take initiative to plan, organize, coordinate and perform work when numerous and diverse demands are involved.
  • Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records, logs, and files.


Salary: $17.86 - $22.50 per hour.
