We are looking for a visual journalist with good news judgment, self-initiative and collaboration skills to join our team at the Gainesville Sun/Gainesville.com and Gatorsports.com
- This photojournalist will help tell the stories of the people, places and institutions of Central Florida.
- The ideal candidate will quickly build a diverse group of sources throughout the community to help them spot news, trends and the uniqueness of our growing city.
- This journalist will need to look for their own photo and video ideas, work well with other journalists to capture visuals to go with stories they’re working on and juggle assignments from editors.
- They will produce compelling photos, videos and galleries for the Gainesville Sun/Gainesville.com and Gatorsports.com and our social media channels.
- This photojournalist needs to be proficient in using Photo Mechanics and be able to write informative, accurate and enticing captions and be able to ftp images from the road using Photo Mechanics.
- This photojournalist also needs to be able to produce podcasts for various departments of the paper and be proficient in either Final Cut Pro, IMovie or Adobe Premiere Pro, in order to produce videos for Gainesville.com and Gatorsports.com
- The visuals will be a mix of breaking news images, sports action shots, features, portraits, standalone art, galleries and videos.
- They should be able to turnaround images within minutes, but also be able to work on longer-term projects on their own and with reporters and editors.
- This journalist will be active in promoting their own work on social media and engaging with readers to answer additional questions.
- This journalist will coordinate well with editors, reporters, digital producers and other visual journalists to help produce powerful visuals on deadline.
The Gainesville Sun has a strong team of veteran and newer journalists who regularly hold public officials accountable, tell great stories and do journalism that results in policy changes. Our photojournalists routinely do award-winning work as part of teams, often coming up with project ideas they work on with others in the newsroom or on their own.
Gainesville is the county seat of Alachua County, Florida. It has an eclectic mix of neighborhoods. It also boasts the University of Florida, which provides an array of opportunities to photograph news and sports including Gator football, basketball, baseball, softball and gymnastics.
Our photographers are expected to avoid conflicts of interest, maintain high standards of accuracy and quality, and safeguard our reputation for independence, fairness and impartiality. A photo kit, a computer and appropriate software is provided by the company.
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor’s in Communications, Journalism or related field or the equivalent in experience and education.
- One to two years of experience in reporting for another news organization in a full-time position, internship or fellowship.
- Exceptional core photojournalism skills (reporting, photography and videography), publishing independently in print and online and promoting content on social media.
- Experience with shooting and editing on an iPhone
- Work in collaboration with other reporters and editors as stories warrant.
- Work with editors and producers to optimize content.
- Experience working under tight deadlines and also producing long-term projects.
