Position Overview
The Director of Marketing and Communications reports directly to the Dean and serves on the Senior Leadership team with the assistant dean, associate deans, and the budget officer. In coordination with the Dean of the School of Social Welfare, this position will create, implement, analyze, and report on the School of Social Welfare’s goals, objectives and strategies and continuously collaborate with the School’s academic, research, community outreach and field units to design and implement short-term and long-range strategic objectives and strategies for their respective areas to create a proactive, comprehensive strategy that allows the School of Social Welfare to reach and exceed goals set by the Dean.
This position monitors progress on the School’s strategic initiatives and creates an annual report on the progress of the overall strategic plan for the School of Social Welfare. This position is also responsible for the creation, overseeing implementation, analysis of metrics, reporting findings and future outcomes of the integrated marketing communications plan for the areas for student recruitment, communications, advancement, and community relations. The director will present the plan to the appropriate department, and works closely and collaboratively with internal leadership, assistant dean, associate deans and other directors and external partners such as Jayhawk Global, Academic Success, Partnership Site administration and marketing units to ensure plans are being implemented at the coordinator level and tactics are continually monitored to determine the success of the objectives.
This position creates and monitors the School’s brand identity and ensures it is in accordance with overall University branding guidelines. Works closely with external units and stakeholders including, Endowment, Alumni Relations, Public Affairs, KU Marketing, Edwards Campus, alumni, and donors. Close communication with the Dean is extremely important to ensure plans are being developed and implemented according to the Dean’s vision for the School of Social Welfare.

Job Description
50% Strategic planning and individualized integrated marketing communication planning for the School of Social Welfare:
- Collaborates with the Dean to monitor/update the School’s strategic plan and develops and manages integrated marketing communication plans with researched, multi-channel marketing tactics and measurable objectives determined to reach goals provided by the Dean in the areas of student recruitment, communications, advancement, and community relations.
- Continually researches the competition, new and existing target markets, and traditional and non-traditional forms of media to build targeted, relationship-marketing strategies
- Monitors, updates and analyzes the School’s strengths, opportunities, weaknesses and threats to guide strategy and message development and provides input regarding program innovations
- Establishes brand identity for collateral and message development and acts as KU Brand expert and ensures the KU Brand is incorporated and interconnected
- Integrates and places emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts at each point in the plan
- Manages recruitment, communications, and advancement budgets and provides guidance and marketing support for other School departments
45% Management and implementation of integrated marketing communication plans:
- The director supervises a communication coordinator and a recruiter, when applicable, and has a dotted line to social welfare navigators and success coaches under KU Academic Success and directs these individuals as they implement the plan’s tactics; therefore, close communication and coordination is required to ensure the plan is being executed properly. In some cases, indirect supervision, guidance, and assistance is required when issues arise with portions of the plan that fall under the sole expertise of the director, such as web and collateral development.
- Works closely with assistant, associate deans and directors, navigators, success coaches, Academic Success, KU Marketing, and Enrollment Management to ensure tactics such as recruitment events, CRM campaigns, collateral development, websites, and social media are being implemented at the coordinator level and reports are generated and communicated on a regular basis to be analyzed and adjusted if necessary
- Reviews and analyzes metric reports against financial investments to determine return on investment, productivity, and goal achievement to determine areas of adjustment, cost reduction and improvement. Routinely report findings to senior leadership team.
- Develops, investigates, disseminates and monitors news and feature stories, maintaining website and social content, and alumni/donor relations including event planning and coordination as it relates to community engagement
- Designs and/or produces marketing materials to support the marketing communications plans such as digital and print collateral and advertising and provides guidance, support and final approval on collateral, digital and social media development when others provide design assistance
- Manages advertising and marketing contracts including the use of outside vendors or software
- Actively mentors and extends marketing expertise to School employees and routinely offers training activities
5% Other duties as assigned by the Dean of the School of Social Welfare
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or related field
- Minimum of five years of marketing, advertising, public relations, or equivalent experience
- Experience with digital marketing strategies, CRM and CMS systems, and analyzing marketing data
- Experience with layout and design computer programs
- Excellent written communication skills as demonstrated in the application materials
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or related field
- Three years of experience in managing budgets
- Three years of experience in a supervisory role
- Demonstrated skills in successfully managing multiple detail-orientated projects or programs
- Excellent verbal and interpersonal communications skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team setting
- Knowledge of publication development and production and experience working with printers and other such vendors.
