Under the supervision of the Compensation Manager, this position will perform a variety of responsible professional, technical, and analytical functions in the areas of classification and compensation. It is responsible for the daily provision of compensation and classification services for classified, wage, and administrative/professional faculty positions as assigned. Providing consultation to managers and employees on a variety of classification and compensation related issues. It’s responsible for assisting in maintaining the integrity of ODU’s varied classification systems and compensation structures. It performs this work by interpreting and applying a variety of rules, regulations, and standards related to classification and salary: analyzing and evaluating requests for new position establishments, position redefinitions, updates, and other related requests. It’s responsible for assisting in the compilation and maintenance of a variety of sources for salary reference data, completing salary studies, and producing reports. These involve the manipulation of complex data and the development of meaningful visualizations regarding salaries, workforce demographics, and forecasting the impact of class/comp decisions. It assists in the design, development, communication, execution, and training of the University’s compensation/classification programs, policies, tools, and processes. Ensures updates to the Compensation/Classification page of the HR website are completed.
Required Qualifications:
Considerable working knowledge of human resources practices and principles. Working knowledge of policies, procedures and best practices, including knowledge of Federal, State and local employment laws as it relates to classification/compensation programs. Working knowledge of the Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection Procedures. Working knowledge of effective customer service techniques. Excellent time management and organizational skills. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with accuracy and attention to detail. Fully proficient skill in Excel including the use of pivot tables, lookups, formulas, and graphs. Fully proficient skill in Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software related to Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) such as BANNER, PeopleSoft, Oracle and familiarity with Adobe Acrobat Professional. Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply policies and to provide sound consultative services to managers and employees. Demonstrated ability to analyze data and statistics, draw sound conclusions and develop recommendations in a concise format. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a customer-service focus. Demonstrated ability to make administrative and procedural decisions and judgements on sensitive and confidential issues. Strong ability to actively seek opportunities to consult, influence, build and sustain successful relationships and gain alignment with peers, functional partners and/or external partners to accomplish business objectives.
Some work experience in one or more of the primary HR disciplines – compensation, employee relations, staffing, benefits, compliance/regulatory and organizational/employee professional development. Some prior working experience utilizing report writing and/or data visualization software. Some prior working experience communicating complex information to technical and non-technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications:
Considerable knowledge of compensation programs, job analysis and evaluation, market pricing methodology, and/or compensation modeling/analytics. Working knowledge of Commonwealth of Virginia policies and practices. Working knowledge of state and/or university human resources information systems and automated recruitment systems such as PAPERS, PMIS, and Banner. Demonstrated ability to effectively use Power Pivot, PowerBI, Tableau, or related visualization software. Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Public Administration, Business Administration, or related field. Professional designation as a SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR. Considerable work experience in one or more of the primary HR disciplines – compensation, employee relations, staffing, benefits, compliance/regulatory and organizational/employee professional development, as well as change management knowledge and project management experience. Some experience in salary administration and/or employee recruitment & selection, reviewing market data to make recommendations in pay rates. Some Human Resources experience in a higher education setting.
Conditions of Employment:
This position is eligible for a one-time $2,000 sign-on bonus for the successful candidate.
