Assistant Teaching Professor in South Asian Religions

The Department of Asian Studies at Penn State (University Park) invites applications for a full-time teaching faculty position (non-tenure-track) in South Asian Religions, with a preference for South Asian Buddhism, to begin in Fall 2024. This position offers full benefits and the possibility of annual renewal and will be filled at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor.

We are seeking applicants with an interest in teaching courses on Buddhism and South Asian religions who can help grow student interest in these areas on campus. The prospective faculty member will contribute to the South Asian Studies minor that we are currently building in the department. Additionally, the courses taught by this faculty member will help satisfy requirements for the Religious Studies minor at Penn State.

Responsibilities include teaching introductory to advanced-level courses on Buddhism and South Asian religions as well as participation in programmatic service. Teaching load is six courses per year (usually three courses per semester - standard academic calendar).

Minimum requirements include a Ph.D. in the study of South Asian Buddhism and/or South Asian cultures and religions. ABD candidates may apply, but they must have their Ph.D. by the start of appointment. Knowledge of or reading proficiency in at least one South Asian language, including Sanskrit or Pali, is also required.

In addition, successful candidates must either have demonstrated a commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and diverse campus community, or describe one or more ways they would envision doing so, given the opportunity.
