Director of Student Affairs

Penn State Berks is seeking applicants for the position of Director of Student Affairs. The Director of Student Affairs is the chief student affairs officer for the campus and is responsible for providing leadership for Student Affairs operations, strategic direction, and assessment. The successful candidate will be an innovative and inspiring leader with a demonstrated commitment to student development; diversity, equity, and inclusion; student health and safety; and student success. The Director will provide leadership, supervision, and vision for all Student Affairs units including campus life, counseling services, health services, residence life, sexual misconduct prevention and response, student engagement and leadership, student government, student conduct, and student care and advocacy. The Director will develop, analyze, and manage the budget for areas of responsibility and oversee staff including hiring, evaluation, and professional development. The Director will work with Athletics staff to oversee club sports, Intramurals, and Campus Recreation.

The Director reports to the campus Chancellor and serves on the Chancellor's senior leadership team. This requires active participation in the overall leadership and management of the campus, partnering with the senior leaders of the other units such as Academic Affairs, Development and Alumni Relations, Enrollment Management, Finance and Business, Housing and Food Services, Strategic Communications, Police and Public Safety, Athletics, behavioral threat management, faculty leaders, and others on strategic planning, data-informed decision making, policy and procedure development and implementation, and new and developing initiatives for the campus.

Education:
  • This position typically requires a Master's degree or higher; a Doctorate degree preferred, plus six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience across different institutions and a degree in a field related to Student Affairs or higher education are strongly preferred.
  • Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher-level jobs.


Additionally, the successful candidate will demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Proven track record, with increasing levels of responsibility, leading and managing multiple work units in Student Affairs, such as student engagement and leadership, residence life, counseling and health services, and recreation
  • Understanding of student development theory and current trends and best practices in Student Affairs, including but not limited to student success, cocurricular programs and assessment, Title IX, bias prevention and response, behavioral threat management, student care and advocacy, and restorative justice
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and a strong commitment to student diversity, equity, and inclusion supported by a track record of actions and achievements
  • Excellent supervisory skills, including the ability to supervise and develop multiple individuals at varying stages of their careers
  • Excellent interpersonal and relational skills, including the ability to foster relationships across campus and with external partners to achieve mutually beneficial goals Excellent strategic and integrated management, budgeting, and accounting skills
  • Excellent judgment and problem-solving skills
  • Understanding of, appreciation for, and experience interpreting and implementing risk management policies and procedures, and crisis management plansAbility to advocate for Student Affairs while understanding and communicating overarching campus priorities and opportunities
  • Communicate both verbally and in writing and demonstrate the ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds



This position requires the following clearances:
  • PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check. This position requires the operation of a motor vehicle as a part of the job duties.
  • A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks in line with the requirements of the position.
