Student Health Educator

University Health Services (UHS) is searching for a Student Health Educator (Student Wellness Specialist - Intermediate Professional) for the Community Health Department. Under the direction of the Associate Director of Community Health (ADCH), this role is responsible for developing, implementing, and promoting community health education programs and materials. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of disease prevention, and public health initiatives as well as experience working with diverse populations. This position will co-lead all outreach efforts that support creating a healthy campus community for students, faculty, and staff. The Student Health Educator will develop and is responsible for a community health wellness calendar to keep students, staff, and faculty informed of upcoming events and opportunities for healthy congregate living.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assess the health needs of individuals and communities
  • Develop and implement health education programs and materials to help mitigate chronic outbreaks
  • Providing training and education to staff and students on preventive healthcare topics
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of health education programs and materials
  • Conduct assessments to identify the specific programming needs of the community
  • Deliver health education and outreach programs to individuals and groups within the PSU community. This may include workshops, seminars, and one-on-one education
  • Assist the ADCH with the development and implementation of comprehensive health education programs and strategies based on assessed needs
  • Collaborate with clinical services, Health Promotion & Wellness (HPW), and Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) in addition to various Student Affairs departments to promote health and wellness
  • Advocate for strategies that support health and wellness
  • Maintain accurate records and reports
  • Identify trends and benchmark best practices on disease mitigation within other college communities
  • Represent UHS to external stakeholders and support the ADCH with strategic planning


Cultural Competences:
  • Work to align all programming within community health and UHS are providing culturally and linguistically appropriate services. Support student-led health efforts, provide leadership when ADCH is unavailable for Student Health Advisory Boards, and coordinate UHS student volunteer programs.
  • Be sensitive to cultural, economic, and social factors that may influence student health behaviors and beliefs. Culturally competent tailor programs.


Evaluation:
  • To measure the effectiveness of community health programs, provide, collect, and analyze data and adjust programs based on feedback where necessary.
  • Maintain accurate records of program activities and report to the ADCH.


Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree and 2+ years related experience is required or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Bachelor's or Master's degree in health care is preferred as well as 3 to 5 years of health service experience in a public/community health setting. Prior experience in higher education and an understanding of best practices in public health are preferred. Strong written and oral communication skills; experience working with diverse populations including sexual/gender orientations and minoritized communities without bias. The ability to work some evenings and weekends is required and must have strong organizational and time management skills.

This position requires the following clearances: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.
