Job Description
The Department of Human Development and Family Science (www.hdfs.vt.edu), in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences (www.liberalarts.vt.edu) at Virginia Tech, invites nominations and applications for the calendar-year position of Associate Professor/Professor and Director of the Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) Program in Falls Church, Virginia (www.nvc.vt.edu/mft), which is located 6 miles from Washington, DC.
Candidates for the position should be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor and have a record of excellence in scholarship, teaching, and professional engagement. The ideal program director is a dynamic and engaged leader with the administrative and interpersonal skills necessary to guide an energetic and diverse group of faculty, staff, and students. The program director will advocate for the MFT program, guide program development and growth, oversee COAMFTE accreditation, foster faculty development, facilitate student learning, supervise staff, serve as a liaison to the main campus in Blacksburg, and manage program fiscal and facility resources. In addition, the program director will maintain a program of externally funded research and publications, teach MFT graduate courses, provide clinical supervision, and direct master’s theses. Travel to national conferences is expected. The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal background check. An ideal candidate will have the clinical experience necessary to effectively supervise students and clients from a variety of backgrounds. The mission of the MFT Master's Program is to provide the training necessary for graduates to become competent, research-informed clinicians, able to work systemically in varied settings with individuals, couples and families from diverse populations, and to become active contributing members to the MFT field. The MFT Master’s Program is known for its strong clinical training and high quality faculty research. The program is located in a large metropolitan area and the on-campus training clinic, the Center for Family Services (https://mft.nvc.vt.edu/cfs.html), serves a diverse community population. The proximity to Washington, DC is also advantageous for researching diverse populations, accessing extramural funding agencies, and engaging in policy initiatives.
The mission of the Department of Human Development and Family Science is to understand and improve the lives of people of all ages in relationships, families, organizations, and communities through education, research, and engagement. Opportunities for transdisciplinary collaboration exist across the university through the Institute for Society, Culture, and Environment; the Center for Gerontology; and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute; among many other programs.
Required Qualifications
Candidates must have an earned doctorate in marriage and family therapy or a closely related clinical field at the time of appointment. Candidates must have an exemplary record of teaching, mentoring, nationally recognized scholarship, extramural funding and grant management, and engagement in professional service commensurate with appointment as a tenure-track Associate Professor or a tenured Professor at Virginia Tech, and hold American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) designation as an Approved Supervisor.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include previous administrative experience and eligibility for MFT licensure in Virginia.
