Substance Misuse Prev Coord
Job Description
The Substance Misuse Prevention Coordinator serves and collaborates with the Hokie Wellness team to develop, implement, and evaluate alcohol and other drug education initiatives. The Coordinator helps lead campus efforts to provide evidence-based prevention programs and practices at each level in the Virginia Tech community.
The Coordinator will:
• Develop and implement health promotion programs, educational materials, and social marketing campaigns to address alcohol and other drug issues and other health and wellness topics as needed.
• Coordinate and co-supervise the IMPACT peer education team, to include hiring, training, coaching, mentorship, and team building.
• Collaborate with campus stakeholders to create programming and promote practices that strategically address high-risk substance use.
• Serve on committees, work groups, coalitions, etc. around health and wellness and other Student Affairs initiatives.
• Work with marketing staff and colleagues to develop effective social messaging and other communication strategies around substance misuse and harm-reduction.
• Facilitate and assist in the development of educational classes and presentations for various groups.
• Develop outreach to increase knowledge of harm-reduction strategies and social norms, and to increase overall visibility on campus.
Required Qualifications
• Master’s degree in health education, health communications, counseling, higher education, or other relevant human services or public health field and/or related experience.
• Experience in health promotion programming and outreach in an educational or community setting.
• Familiarity with harm-reduction approaches to alcohol and other drug prevention and intervention.
• Strong public speaking and facilitation skills.
• Experience planning educational outreach programs and events.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing and implementing health promotion programs.
- Experience in a higher education setting.
- Knowledge of peer education programs or experience providing training and supervision in a professional capacity.
- Experience in marketing or communications to include creating health messaging, graphic design, creating web content, and social media campaigns.
